5 'Health Foods' that can flare Rosacea

Updated: Aug 7, 2020

Trying to be healthy and ‘eat clean’ with Rosacea? It’s not as simple as you might think…!

The immune system in Rosacea is hyper-sensitive and some ‘healthy’ foods can make your Rosacea angry. Here’s 5 ‘health foods’ you should try with caution and monitor for flare-ups.

KEFIR or LIVE YOGHURT I’ve heard of plenty of anecdotal reports that yoghurt can help Rosacea when applied topically to the face, but it may be best avoided as a food. This is because it contains both ‘casein’ and ‘histamine’. These compounds can inflame an already sensitive immune system and cause a Rosacea flare.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR Yes, even the organic versions with the ‘mother’! ACV can be great to aid digestion but consider alternatives, because ACV is loaded with histamine.

SAUERKRAUT and KIMCHI These can be great foods to rebalance gut bacteria (something most Rosaceans desperately need!) but these foods breed histamine-producing bacterias, so they are off the menu. The spice in Kimchi is a double-whammy, as it can activate receptors on immune cells and get them all worked-up!

TOMATOES Most Rosaceans will have already made this connection, but may not know why… Well, before we go hating on Tomatoes, let’s put in on record that they are a great, healthy choice for most people. They are tasty, packed with vitamins like vitamin A and C as well as antioxidants like Lycopene. BUT… They both contain histamine and stimulate histamine release from immune cells. On top of this, as a member of the nightshade family, they can trigger an already sensitive immune system.

CINNAMON A wondrous spice for many, could be the secret trigger you never suspected! Cinnamon is fantastic for energy regulation, blood sugar control and anti-inflammation. However, the Cinnamaldehyde compound in cinnamon can trigger receptors on certain immune cells and sensitise your Rosacea.

I hope that’s given you some ‘food for thought’ people
