Rosacea can have many underlying causes, but one of the trickiest to identify and deal with is mercury. So, just for you, here's the low-down on mercury and Rosacea...
Mercury is a metal found in seafood, 'silver' dental fillings and pollution.
We can detoxify mercury in small amounts, but large or chronic exposures can accumulate in our bodies.
This is bad because mercury can imbalance pretty much every system in the body; especially the liver, the immune system, and by raising yeast levels
This matters because...
* Yeast issues are a common driver of Rosacea - if you have chronic, intractable yeast issues (thrush, athletes foot, fungal nails, seborrhoeic dermatitis etc.), then mercury may be a factor
* The Liver - detoxifying mercury can inflame the liver and all Rosacea is driven by chronic inflammation
* Immunity - mercury can make the immune system hypersensitive (sensitivities and autoimmunity) or it can suppress the immune system (yeast and bacterial infections). Either of these actions leads to inflammation and Rosacea
How do I know if mercury is a problem for me?
Firstly, determine if you have had exposure, eg...
1. Excessive fish consumption, especially tuna (common in fitness types / personal trainers)
2. Multiple dental amalgams (the 'silver' ones) or a recent amalgam removal
3. Proximity to a coal-based power plant
Then, test to determine if your levels are a problem for you. Hair testing can be done, but it will miss 'slow-detoxers' or older exposures. Generally, I prefer a challenge test.
Then what..?
In general you need to:
1. Stop any ongoing exposure
2. Support optimal detox and liver health
3. Chelate the mercury (pull it out of your body)
The first two can be accomplished with general gut health and detox programmes, however, mercury chelation requires specialist help and should not be attempted alone.
